Barely 6 inches across, this little glass dish presented a selection of delicious tiny cakes and cookies at the end of the meal at QB Duepuntozero restaurant on the waterfront on Lake Garda in Salo. Lombardy.
Just before, we had this delicate Piedmontese almond cake served on a pool of zabaglione - a traditional cake I had never before tasted, despite years of almost commuting to Milan in my old fashion life. We wandered into this tiny, elegant little restaurant without any forethought - we were hungry, it looked nice - and were superbly rewarded.
The next day an even more amazing discovery: turmeric breadsticks among the offering at Esplanade in Desenzano del Garda. Plus a tasting tray of tiny cakes, miniature cups of sweets - zabaglione ice cream, amaretti cream, creme brule, pureed berries.
Breakfast at Hotel Bella Riva Gardone Riviera brought breakfast cakes; the most spectacular Torta di Nocci (among many, many wonderful Torta di Nocci recipes in Italy) with almonds, walnuts and pistachios in the mix
and a crumbly, very traditional northern Italian almond cake
